cameron and the shiner

I took Cameron to the ENT today thinking that he had an ear infection. We couldn’t get in to see the doctor because he’s booked through May, but they fit us in to see the nurse practitioner instead. Good enough for me. The only good news to come out of this appointment is that he doesn’t have an ear infection. However, he isn’t saying words besides ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ and he should be saying more. They are going to refer us to a speech therapist. I guess that’s good news, but bad too. I hate my child needing more specialty care. But this isn’t the worst of the appointment…

Prior to being seen Cameron tripped, fell to the floor with tremendous force, and cracked his face on the corner of the cabinet. He hit it so hard that he dented the cabinet and even left a scratch on it. Cameron immediately started screaming bloody murder. I picked him up with urgency and when I turned him around he had blood on his face and a massive hematoma around his right eye. The swelling was immediate. He could barely catch his breathe it hurt so much. I took him out of the room and looked for a nurse, which they quickly got us some ice. They even tried to distract him with a lolly pop which actually did help calm him down.

Finally, he stopped crying and I stopped the blood. The doctor left one of his patients and came to exam Cameron himself and make sure he didn’t need x-rays, which he doesn’t. Whew!!!! However, if the white of Cameron’s eye turns to blood at all we have to take him to the ER for a CAT scan. It was all I could do to not cry myself. Once I got into the car I instantly cried. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I had to call my DH to get a hold of myself.

Cameron is pretty miserable. He keeps touching his eye and crying; blinking a lot too. I’ve been trying to put ice on it, but as most of you with children know it’s extremely difficult to hold it there for very long until they start wrestling to get away. I’m doing the best I can. I can only imagine what this shiner is going to look like tomorrow.

Talk soon.

Awww, poor little guy. I hope the swelling goes down soon.

How old is Cameron? My boy didn't really talk until 2 1/2! He just wasn't interested in talking. He understood everything and could make himself understood. He was, and still is, a quiet kinda guy!

Oh my goodness, Julie! I'm glad Cameron's doing ok and I'm sure you're a bucket of nerves. This happened at the Drs, right? What kind of cabinet was it - metal? I assume because of the blood? Sharp point? Sounds like an awful type of cabinet in a children's examining room.

Take good care,
Tanya

Oh my gosh! Scary! My 2 year old actually did something similar...in my LNS! He scratched his face (4 inches long right next to his eye) on a hook that was holding floss on the wall...and he cried so much that sound didn't come out for a minute or so! I certainly hope that he feels better soon! Neosporin works wonders for healing and scars!

On the speech front...I encourage you to stay on top of it. It's definitely something that's easy to address now and can save time, money and energy later down the road.

Good luck on both fronts!

Oh! Poor Cameron, sorry to hear about this, I hope he feels better soon. I hope you feel better soon too, it can't be easy coping with these childhood incidents. Hugs to you!

Ohhhh, poor Cameron. It looks so impressive, I can just imagine it hurts.
I hope speech therapy will help, it's good that they can diagnose it early now.
Hugs to you both.

I feel for you on the Cameron's accident. It just break our heart to see our little ones crying and in pain. I feel so bad for him as well, it must hurt very bad. Take care and Cameron will recover soon.
My son had a little accident in the garage when he was 7 months old and required stitches. He was crying so hard in the ER room. I had to stay outside and let my husband deal with him and he kept on screaming mama.Try to take it easy and have a great day.

Oh, I am just so sorry for you (and for Cameron!). That's just such a shattering experience. I hope he's feeling better, instead of worse, the day after.

Speech therapy - I wish my mom had done it for me. Took me years to figure out how to make sounds come out of my mouth more or less right, and made me really self-conscious. At Cameron's age, the issue will be quickly pinpointed and the right kind of support provided and he won't even remember it when he's older. And think how much fun you'll have talking with him!!! :D
